The outpost readied for the onslaught of Orcs. They were only 5 miles away, camped for the night. Close enough to smell the foul horde. The numbers were now estimated at about 125 with no siege weapons, fortunately. Raifer decided that it would be better to try a little hit and run first, wear them down a little, and maybe chase them the other way. Hopefully it would not bring them on in a frenzy.
He set out two messages to the King in Al-Alin to let them know their situation and that there was a Drow prisoner that needed to be transferred to the kingdom and thoroughly interrogated. Once that was done, he selected a small team of 10 to go forward and strike. Harry Albright was left behind in charge of the outpost to defend and fall back to the water hole if need be. All players set, the put out to see what they could do.
Luck was not on their side. As they approached the area they would leave the horses and proceed on foot, they crested a rise and were immediately spotted by an orc patrol on the far side of the small vale. Two orcs broke and ran towards their camp, the remaining four readied bows. Raifer gave the order to charge forward. On the ride to the other side, Raifer was thrown from his horse in the charge. Lauren Ellial stopped to help him back up. They tried to close the ground as quickly as possible avoiding arrows as they charged on. Seladon and Manfred too several hits. They continued on and fired back from horseback as they could, and one of the orcs was knocked over by a shot to the knee.
As the raiding party approached, the orcs broke and ran back over the ridge. The party slowed as they reached the top and found that the enemy had split up, each running in a different direction. Raifer split up the group to take out all the orcs in sight. Three of the four were overtaken and slain quickly. The druid Seladon chased the badly wounded orc and captured him using a Trip and an Entangle. Raifer recognized that the others that had broken away early were approaching the encampment and could not be stopped, and turned his crew around. The captured orc they took with them for questioning.
The party returned to the outpost and made ready for the oncoming horde. Meanwhile, Raifer questioned the new prisoner. It's attitude was nothing short of what could be expected. It wanted a big piece of Raifer and threatened him that they would all die when Grunder came. many insults were thrown back and forth and, for whatever reason, Raifer had the orc untied and let him have a shot at him. He drew a knife that had not been spotted earlier and dove at Raifer. The orc was quickly knocked out by a thunderous one-timer, assisted by a yawara. While he was unconscious, Raifer had the knife replaced in his sheath. When he came to, he was still in a fiesty mood and tried again to start a fight and was again quickly dropped. His fun now over, Raifer searched the orc for any other information and found a crude map of the area and scanty orders to scout the area and return before breakfast.
The crew waited for the battle, but the orcs took their time and waited for the morning, ate breakfast and then marched on. They approached the walls of the outpost and broke in to columns. A smaller group of about ten orcs huddled towards the rear, obviously the larger orcs and most likely the leaders. The columns pushed forward and as soon as the defenders in the wall towers let loose a first volley of arrows, the orcs broke in to a charge and threw themselves at the chicken wire and split rail fences. The outpost defenders continued to rain arrows on the chargers, who obviously did not expect any type of wall defenses. As they reached the wall a volley of crossbow bolts showered the orcs from the mountain walls on either side of the outpost gap. Where they came from, Raifer surmised that the Xvarts had other hiding spots in this area as well.
The orcs pressed on and eventually broke through the fences on the southern end of the wall. They tried to pour through and were met immediately by a group of soldiers, led by the dwarf Cleave Doublehard. With a break established, the Orcan leaders headed for the opening trying to push in to the compound. Arrows continued to fly and thin the ranks of the orcs. the fences slowed them much more than they could have expected and it took quite some time in the battle before the main gate was thrust open by the central force. By that time most of their numbers had been eliminated. But the southern force had broken through and were starting to defeat the fence guards. Nord was wounded badly and three of the guards were dead. Raifer, Marci and Kunder raced out to assist the defense and take on the larger, tougher orcs now pressing through the melee.
By now, the orcs were out of the line of fire of the Xvarts, and were pressing even though it was apparent now that they would not accomplish their goal. The outpost defenders circled the remaining orcs and closed in. They destroyed the remainder of them with Grunder being the last standing. Raifer made a point by taking on the Orc leader himself and even giving the brute a second 2-handed sword when his was broken so he could continue the filght. The move cost Raifer several new scars as the orc fanatically tried to emerge the only survivor. He was eventually slain and decapitated by Raifer.
The Xvarts came down from the mountain walls and met up with Raifer. The familiar blue face of Gliksnar was leading the way out. They exchanged a few thanks and the Xvarts went on their way. Raifer removed the head of Grunder for effect and showed it to their Drow prisoner that spoke so fearfully of the oncoming horde obviously disturbing the elf.
This battle done, they soldiers set out to clean up and rebuild their defenses and wait for dwarven reinforcements and prisoner escort teams.
