The McMurtry farm had been humming along getting back in to the swing. But on this day one of the hands came running up to Macguyver. There was trouble. The cattle corral had been damaged and there were a number of head missing. Cattle rustling was suspected. Macguyver gathered up a team from the adventurer crowd working the farm, organizing them to head out and investigate.
The first act was to check the evidence left behind. The smashed rail fence and footprints led directly to a confirmation there was a robbery. The tracks were relatively clear heading south and made around 6 to 8 hours earlier. The group of 6 gathered up supplies and headed out. They followed the tracks for the day moving along the trail left behind. The day ended with no results but during the night watch Bahruq spotted the glow of a camp fire coming over the open terrain from miles ahead. This clue spurred the group to break camp early and try to close the gap.
Early on their tracking was disrupted by sounds of an onrushing pack of kobolds as they crested a rise and charged the group. The missle weapons were first to attack. Robyn and Didi dropped kobolds on their first shots before they could close enough ground to engage. Robyn followed with a Bless covering all of the group. As they moved in Mablung dropped his first with his sword as he was also struck by an enemy. Robyn supported the front line with a Spiritual Whip and Mablung defended himself with a Shield.
Helena loosed a crossbow bolt that ripped the arm from another as Mablung dropped another. The number of kobolds was diminishing quickly. Mooshi set her Naginata against their charge killing another but also taking a hit from the crowd as two more kobolds ineptly dropped their weapons in combat. Mooshi responded with another charge attack finishing off one more. Helena had moved to Mablung to issue a Cure Minor, restoring some of his health. Didi was able to fire one last arrow to finish off the last of the creatures.
A little healing was performed to restore health and off they went, continuing south after the cattle. The day passed and they closed ground, they hoped. The night watch would reveal just how close they had gotten. Bahruq and Didi were both able to spot the glow of a camp fire probably only a couple of miles ahead. The decision was made to head out early again and use the low areas of the rolling fields to conceal their approach. But it was not long before a little confusion among the rangers occurred. Bahruq broke the tie and a direction was made. As it turned out, it was not the best choice. The low area ended in an area where they could only reveal themselves on higher ground. But luck was on their side as they spotted a number of creatures coming their way. It was obviously some cattle that appeared to have wandered off followed by a few humanoids chasing after. There were 6 cattle and 5 chasers. The group looked for some low ground to lay in wait as they meandered in their direction.
As they made their way into position Didi had some trouble handling her horse. The sound it made must have carried too far as the chasers heard it. 4 of them, Gnolls as it turned out, broke off from the group leaving one to herd the cattle onward back to their camp. The group poised themselves at the ridge of a rise in the fields. The gnolls came charging in and the group broke to engage. Robyn caught the entire group in a Bless getting things going and Mablung cast a Shield for himself as 2 moved in on him. Unfortunately, the gnoll was able to strike Mablung a heavy blow, knocking him unconscious.
Bahruq was still on his horse and attempted to swoop around the group. One of the gnolls broke from the fight with Mablung and charged him. The gnoll missed but Bahruq struck hard from atop his horse. Helena was now engaged with gnolls and attempted to use her martial skills but missed on her first strike. She received a heavy blow in response. The group pressed against the rough gnolls. Robyn scored a hit with her bow and Mooshi dropped the first with a charge attack from her naginata. But Bahruq's luck was about to run out. He continued forward with his horse to engage the last gnopll that was leading the cattle away. It turned and set his spear against the charge critically striking Bahruq in the head, knocking him from his horse. Bahruq fell to the ground, his head struck by the spear. His horse, now riderless, came to a stop a little ways from the spot.
The battle continued. A gnoll on Didi dropped his weapon. Robyn raced to the aid of Mablung casting a Cure Minor restoring him to consciousness. Mooshi pressed her attacks killing another as Helena absorbed another hit and fell. Robyn tried to aid Mooshi with a Spritual Whip but the spell failed. Fortunately the gnoll charging in on her dropped its weapon. Mablung engaged and killed another. Didi fired and dropped one more. Robyn reached Helen and cast a Cure Minor but it was not enough to bring her around yet. Another Cure and she was up as Mooshi killed the last of the first group. She moved to chase after the last, chasing after it, calling out to it. The gnoll turned to engage. Didi fired a shot that struck and Mooshi culminated the kill with a charge attack.
Helena rushed to the aid of Bahruq using her Cure spells to heal the dying figure. Her efforts were successful, saving him from an imminent demise. Didi moved to corral the wandering cattle and redirect them to the farm. A decision was made to leave whatever was left with the remainder of the gnolls and head back. It took two more days but they made it there to find there were 8 cattle missing and they returned 6 of them.
