Port Cleanup

Cord will take a look around the docks and start counting heads. He wants to make sure none of our group is amongst the bodies strewn about. Once he is sure all nine of us are at least walking around he will find Gwyn and ask him to check on our wounded before seeing if the town guards need more help. He will definitely tell Gwyn to check on Rennala and point her out. Once that’s done Cord will sling his bow and walk over to the group of guards. “Good morning. So how did all of this start?”

Cord will find there are none of his group among the dead. He will approach Gwyn to ask him to begin checking on wounded. The guard will greet you warmly, grasp your hand firmly, shake it and thank all of you for your help. He will ask if you have any healers that can help his crew. Then tell you the guards reported to the dock to stop more looting that was happening when they intercepted this crowd returning to their boat. They are likely to have some booty on them taken from the businesses they raided. One of the guards raced up the gang plank, kicking over the brazier filled with pitch starting the fire. He is afraid that brave soul is likely gone.

Cord will eventually realize that even though none of our group is amongst the dead Hal is nowhere in sight. He will point out Gwyn to the guard that asked about an healer, excuse himself from the guards and will start shouting for Hal. Cord will keep shouting for Hal and try to get the attention of anyone else from our group to see if they know where Hal is.

The ship is on fire. The fight did not take over long for the fire to spread too much. A very quick look will reveal there is pitch on the deck which has been causing the inordinate amount of smoke.

Once the fight is over Books will start looking for loose change, he’ll start with the Zandits closest to the Dock House and work his way towards the boat gangplank. He will be sure to look for any Zandit patches on their clothes and any kind of paperwork (letters, orders, maps, etc…) they might have on them.

Morgana will go to the portion of the docks where it intersects the town and begin to shout "Fire! Fire! There is fire on the docks." She will then start to look around for buckets or any other container for water. Morgana shouts for assistance but none is immediate in response. The fire on deck is not spreading quickly due to the location of where it is on the boat. At this time most of what is burning is just the pitch. Is it spreading? Yes, but slowly. Morgana is shapechanges into a pelican. She is going to fly in the water ... gather a mouthful of water .. Fly over the fire and dump the water in her mouth. She will need to make several trips. The burning pitch will spread when doused making her job harder but given how short the trips are she will be able to accomplish the task in about 10 or 15 water drops. Consider her occupied for a while.

Illianna will start gathering up loot from dead Zander Zandits.

Books and Illiana will begin searching the dead. They will definitely find Zander patches on some. Typically the patch is covered by another arm band that could be pulled back to reveal the insignia. They will find a decent amount of cash on their first body searched but will overhear the comments of the guard regarding the raid. You will not, as yet, find any papers or maps on the dead.

Meanwhile.... Hal is locked in the captain's quarters. I hope to have the tapestry map soon. I am trying to figure out an easy way to get it done the way I want it. Hal Will use his detect magic psionic ability and scan the inside of the cabin starting with the chest and then working his way around the room. He has no thought on keeping anything for himself or from the party. Inside the cabin Hal will find the tapestry itself is magical, of some kind. He will also find a Pirate style hat that radiates magic and a small chest that draws his attention but is locked. There seems to be something magical inside it. Hal carefully wraps up the magical tapestry (map) and lays it on the bed as he tries to hum out any pirate songs he might recall from his younger days. He's not even thinking about touching the chest unless he had found a key. 'That's a job best left for Books or Illiana. Key might be on that ass clown I knocked overboard??? But, the hat...', Hal looks around for a mirror, grabbing the hat to try on. Hal will lay out the map..... He has not found a key anywhere. He begins singing pirate ditties as he tries on the hat.... he thinks it looks good on him.

Furion Will collect his two dropped elven blades and she's them and also sling his bow. He will call out to those on a dock, "The wizard on the boat that went into the water, can somebody see if he is still alive? He may have some information on him that we could use! “ Furion will call to Cord and point out the two locked doors on the ship's first deck. "Hal kicked the Zandit out of there and locked himself in, I think."

Hal will mug in front of the mirror with the new hat, "You look marvelous," he says to himself and goes to unlock one of the doors at a time. He leans out and says, "Arghh matey's! When yer done swabbin' the decks, have Books and Illiana join me in the Cap'ns cabin!"

Books will continue his search of the Zandits along with Illiana. Books will also lean in close to Illiana “Be careful, the guards are gonna want to see everything these thugs have. They were looting the businesses around here for the last day or two after all.” That being said, Books will be “picky” about what he pockets, if anything.

Illiiana whispers to "Books" .... cash is cash. Perhaps we keep a percentage as a "rescuers fee". Items can be identified.

Books will give Illiana a nod and a smile “Well then, happy hunting”

As the flame from the fires die out, Furion will call out to Morgana, "HEY! See if you can see if that wizard that got knocked off the boat surfaced around the boat or the shoreline hell, even out in the bay!" He turns to Cord, "We should get someone to check the water where he went in." As a pelican she will dive into the water and see if she can spot the wizard that fell into the water.

Morgana will find the wizards body sinking below where the ship has been moored. He appears quite dead.

Books and Illiana will take extra time to be as surreptitious as possible. They will find quite a bit of coin on each Zandit they search. But this will take more time than usual given their precautions. On average they will find between 20 and 30 platinum on each body. But they will notice there those among the guards that will look at them from time to time. They can surmise their actions have been noted.

Books will use his Detect Magic but will find nothing of note on any of the Zandits. The guards will report that the Wizard that went overboard was the only one they heard issuing directions to the crew.

Once Books and Illiana get around to the Zandit wizard in their search, Books will cast Detect Magic. Once he checks out the wizard then he will back track to the bodies they have already searched

Once Books is done with the “searching and detecting” he will walk over to Furion. “If we can figure out which one of these idiots was in charge maybe we can still get some information out of him. The dead can still answer a question or two. I just hope it wasn’t the guy in the drink.”
I’m assuming one of the wizards was giving orders but maybe the guards can narrow it down. Maybe they heard one of them shouting orders or which bandit the others deferred to while they were looting? As a 7th level cleric Books only gets to ask 2 questions during his Speak with Dead spell. He will ask the group which two questions are most important. The two he is thinking of so far are;
1. Where did you sail from when you sailed here?
2. Are there more of your group in this area?
Or can someone else think of a better question?
- What is your main base of operations?

Books will hold the spell until we can agree on what two questions. Once we get the wizard out of the water of course.

Speak with Dead does give us about a week to question these guys. I don’t know how that would work if Books and Gwyn were able to get multiples of it ready. Could we keep asking the same one or would we have to ask a different guy each casting?

While everyone is busy brainstorming about what questions to ask and the guards are cleaning up/healing up Books will give Illiana a look and “follow me” nod of his head. He will head up the gangplank onto the ship and knock on the far door of the Captain’s Quarters. Illiana will follow.

Oh, before he walks away, Books will hand his half of the coins that he found on the Zandits to Gwyn. “That’s all the bandits had on them”. Illiana will silently follow suit.

Morgana will indeed attempt to drag his body up from the depths to the surface.

Once Hal lets Books and Illiana into the cabin and they see the pirate hat he is wearing “I don’t know whose it was but that hat was made for you” "Aww, you're too kind my friend! I scanned the room for magic. This tapestry which is a map with what I believe is friendly locations of the Zandit Organization, the chest has something inside of it and, this delightful chapeau. Don't know what they do though."
Books will look at Hal with a bit if a shocked look. “Wearing a magic hat without knowing what it does is a very bad idea. Take it off….if you can”. Hal's eyes go wide when Books mentions the possible magic of the hat. "I didn't think about that, obviously." He reaches down to his crotch and then looks back to Books, next grabbing at his breast area, "I didn't change int a female, did I? I hear there are magic items that can do that. Huh, Let me try to read the item," Hal says as he takes the hat off and tries to see if he knows any Lore about it. He will then check the tapestry.

Books and Illiana drop off the cash they found on the Zandits. The guard thanks you profusely for your assistance... again. He does not even take time to check it or each of you. He gathers it in to a sack that has 'official markings' on it. He tells you he will bring this back to the businesses that have reported the looting. They MAY want to reward you for your actions. Where are you staying and what is your name?

There are mooring ropes that can be used to haul the body up. Morgana can easily tie one around the body and with a little effort and a couple of people on the rope you will be able to haul the dead wizard on to the dock.

Hal finds a pen, ink and parchment and is able to jot down the location of the 'dots'. Can you tell me which you are making note of?

Books and Illiana join Hal in the captain's quarters. They are able to search the chest for traps but find none. The lock is quite tricky and takes more time than expected but they are able to finally pick the lock. Inside they find it filled with some mithril, platinum and some gold. The number of pieces is : Mithril - 35, Platinum - 200, Gold - 50. There is also a small pouch, on it is written 'For BIG problems'. Inside the pouch is a ring that emanates a faint glow.

As Hal searches the rest of the quarters he finds a bunch of papers detailing the crew and their duties, a log of how much they have taken in which roughly matches what is in the chest and a letter directing him to sail to Apua and attempt to establish a relationship with these 'odd people'. Return to the home port as soon as possible. Hal will be able to remove the hat without any trouble. He is unable to identify what properties the hat has at this time and does not believe it is an item of any renown.

Illiana is able to cast the Identify spell and finds the item is a Ring of Giant Control and has 4 charges in it.

Hal's intention is to make note of these locations (orange dots) and their proximity to major towns/cities/areas that can be made out as very likely Zandit areas of control. Hal removes the hat and puts it with the tapestry, ring and the coins. "Can't make heads or tails out of the hat or what the ring is."

Books will look at Hal and Illiana “Okay, let’s put the ring back in its pouch, and roll up this map. Hal put the ring and hat in your pocket and grab the map. Illiana and I can carry the coins from the chest, the ship’s log and the rest of the paperwork we found. The hat and ring we keep to ourselves, if anyone asks it’s just a normal map we found in here. We can share the info from the logbook with the authorities here so they can return the stolen coins. Hopefully we can be on our way with all this info without having to tell them what we are really doing here. Sound like a plan?”

Hal nods in approval as he tucks away the hat and the ring from plain view. "What about the cargo they may have in the hold below? Might be too much for us to carry and it is likely a lot of it was taken from here over the past couple of days here. The coin and the magic we found is easier for us to tote and use without the bulk of whatever may be below but, I think we should have a look to see what is down there, yeah? Can you lock the chest back up?"

I’m assuming the logbook says that all the coins from the chest are from businesses here Sentonville? I’m also assuming that the logbook has more info on their trip up and down the coast before hitting Sentonville? Yes, Books would have told the guards that we are staying at the Sentonville Inn under Cord’s name.

Books is still thinking about asking the dead wizard these questions;
1. Where did you sail from when you sailed here?
2. Are there more of your group in the area?

Thoughts? Ideas?

We take the log book and see if we can give the appropriate businesses here their goods back. Hell, if we don't or can't use it, give it to them as a consolation prize for their troubles. Hell, I'd cut the surviving guards in on the take from below. We got money from the dead pirates too, so let's look in the ship's hold and see what they gots....

3. How is the relationship between the pirates and the White Ninja?
4. Who is the main contact between the pirates and the Zandits?

Hal is able to make note of the dots and where they are. He removes the hat, which will not fit in the pouch, and stashes the goods in his makeshift rucksack. Books and Illiana carry the chest out of the cabin. The hat, ring, map and paperwork are kept private. The log book details the raids they have completed on this trip. So far the ship has only stopped in Talos, Sentonville and Oompa Lloompa Island. It details the ship was headed for Teluna and then Apua. The captain made note that he picked up what he intended to use as exchange goods to make a deal with the Emperor. The Books does NOT detail how much came from each business, only the haul as a total. It describes the chest holding 2750 gold piece value so far, which would exclude whatever the raiders had on them that had yet to be inventoried.

Then the decision to investigate the lower decks. There are two ways down. Through the grate in to hold or down a staircase towards the rear. Down the stairs you go and find the well stocked food pantry and a walled off area with a locked door. You are able to use a key spotted hanging on the wall near the door to unlock it. Opening it you see a brig holding about a dozen Oompa Lloompas.

Once Books gets thru the door and sees the prisoners he will see if there is a separate cell key somewhere or if the door key looks like it will fit the cell key.

“Whoa!! Hey, let’s get you all out of there. You’re in Sentonville, are any of you from the mainland here or are you all from the island? Is everyone able to walk up the steps and out on to dock? We have healers on the way, so once you’re off the boat they can tend to all of you.”

We can take a look around to see if the prisoners belongings are nearby or maybe out by the foodstuffs. Books will ask Illiana to take a look around to make sure there isn’t anything else hidden down here. Maybe a secret door or hatch. Something hidden amongst the foodstuffs.

How many ships does Zander’s bandits have?, that’s a great question. How about, where does Zander’s bandits dock their ships?

Hal holds his hands wide out to his sides, greeting the freed slaves. "Good day little ones! We are here to free you from your bonds and impending lifetime of servitude to a master which you did not ask for. Is there a spokesman amongst you who would be willing to speak with us? I'm sure we could get Rony here to speak of our good intentions! What say you? Please, please, follow my associates to the upper deck and off of this ship. Help awaits you outside if you require it. There seems to be plenty of food and drink if you require that as well."

The key you find will fit the cell locks allowing you to open the doors and let the Oompa Lloompa's free. They will tell you they are all from the Island and were kidnapped. One of them will say they are all chocolatiers and were told they would be sold as collateral and would be expected to work for their new 'owners'.

The Oompa's will greet you warmly and follow you out. They do not know who Ronny is.

As you search the ship you find the only Zandit remaining on the ship at this time are the three cooks who you will find in the galley but will put up no fight whatsoever. A question or two later you will find they had been shanghai'd as well and are happy to be free of these captors.

As to the disposition of the ship... you will need to let me know what you want to do ....

The orders letter does not have an addressee and is not signed. I will hold on answering the questions until you confirm what you want to ask.

The total take from the Zandits on shore is 520 platinum. That is the total between both Books and Illiana. If you want, 45 and 50 can be 'pocketed' without too much notice. Once the Wizard is brought up from the depths Books will cast his Speak With Dead and ask the following questions :

1. Where is the home port you were told to report back to?
On the lake down river from the bay Talos is located on. 2. How were you going to establish a relationship with the Emperor after offering him the Oompa Loompa’s?
The Oompa Loompa's were our offer to begin negotiations. I was to detail their mastery in Chocolate making and other chef skills. Failing using this I was approved to offer protection from our ships to any of their ships and coastal defenses.

Next time ...

What hath our actions wrought…
