There was about a month’s time needed after the last trip. Some rest, recovery and training. But the time was not spent idly by all.
Marci placed an order for some of the more exotic, custom arrows. Kozmo took possession of the Wizard Lock Key and Rennala placed an order for a Balanced and Sharp long sword. Hal used the time to adventure into the wild to see about acquiring a familiar. He got one. A wildcat. Elena continued the process of performing a Legend Lore on the Ring of Giant Control. Cord brushed up his story telling and relayed the battle against the were-gnolls to at the next sacrifice service at the Church of Thor. And then there was Raifer and his…. advances… which we’ll leave those details for some other time…
During the gap time the envoy to the Intercities reached his destination. SD discovered this first hand when the Governor used one of the Talking Crystals sent with his response. The man introduced himself as Terrence Whitehall, the current Governor-elect of the Intercities. He probed SD to see what form of assistance he could provide. In exchange he provided quite a bit of information. The previous governor had met an ‘untimely demise’ when he was invited to Town 11 to meet with their administration. It was believed the White Ninja force there assassinated him. He had now been elected by the commonwealth as the new governor and he wanted to waste no time in forming some type of opposition to this unwanted menace. There were 26 of the 31 cities that had voted with him to remove the influence of the Ninja. They were aware of direct and overt influence in 3 towns, 11, 16 and 24, There were 2 others they were unsure of their allegiance. With this information SD approached the party about to head out and proposed a new path through the Intercities to do a little more active recon and to pass through City Prime as his representatives. After some strategizing they agreed and set out on 948/5/25.
The plan was to head north and make directly for Town 16. 2 or 3 days at most. The group all on horse or wagon traveled quickly and uneventfully until the town was in sight and a group of something was spotted approaching from that direction. The plume of dust kicked up from the road drew attention and Tyrade was the first to identify the oncoming group as wearing all white. Furion opted to cast Invisibility on himself and wait. The two groups approached each other. Morgana thought to attempt to disbelieve what she was seeing but to no avail. As they neared each other Marci was first to notice a cobra icon embroidered on their robes. And she was the unwitting target for their aggression as the last member of the group chose to walk into Marci, bumping here. Marci was not having any of his bull and defended herself when the Ninja suggested she should apologize for getting in his way.
This interchange did not go well and the entire group prepared for a fight to erupt. But Jade rushed from her place at the rear of the group to discuss with the aggressor what could be done. They talked. They leader asked where they were headed. When Jade mentioned Town 16 he informed them they needed a pass to travel through and he could provide that for a fee. He judged their group and arrived at a price of 1000 gold for the party. With some consternation she agreed to pay and produced an adamantium piece to pay. The leader wrote out a pass on what was a prepared pad and gave it to her. Then deliberately bumped Marci once more as he walked away. The level of restraint displayed by the party was monumental as the White Ninja group of 11 continued on their way.
The remainder of the second day was uneventful and the party arrived at the front gate of Town 16 late morning on the third day. They presented the pass they had obtained and were allowed to enter. But as they did, one of the guards at the gate house hit the side of their wagon with a paint blotch, marking the wagon. In to the city they trudged not finding a suitable place to stay the night until quite deeper in where they found Sweet 16. This inn had the accommodations they needed. Jade and Gwyn went in to secure rooms and were met by a counter person who was more than a little nervous. He asked questions about where they were from and where they were going. It became clear he was not happy with the current administration running Town 16. A very tentative conversation led the participants to open up a bit. The proprietor finally asked if they would take a message from him to the Governor in City Prime. Gwyn gave his word and oath on his holy symbol. He handed him a scroll sealed with a wax seal and shared some additional information about the paint blotch on their wagon being a mark for the local ninja to work them over and find some way to take it from them. He promised breakfast early and the best care for their horses and wagon.
With all the extra information they decided they would try to leave town as early as they could having picked up a lot of information already. Cord used a Talking Crystal to update SD on the situation and they chose to crash in their rooms to rest and leave on schedule. Gwyn added the protection of a Glyph of Warding and they set up watches, just in case maintaining a low profile until they were leaving.
Around 1 am they got their things together and headed out with some traveling food provided by the owner of the inn. They headed for the same gate they came in through with the intention of leaving the Intercities to loop around to the quickest path in to City Prime. As they arrived at the direct approach to the gate they scouted. Furion used an Invisibility and Fly spells to reconnoiter the area. He found 3 guards at the gate, 2 in the house and one wandering the gate line. But just outside he found 6 more crashed and asleep. They made plans and prepared to make for the gate.
Step 1, Gwyn cast Silence 15’ radius on the guard house.
Step 2, Tyrade cast Vanish on himself then Bowgengle’s Fleeting Journey to teleport in and out. He ported near the guard house and approached the window to look in. The two were sitting in the house. With them in sight he moved on to the next phase.
Step 3, Tyrade cast Ghostly Garrote to disable both. While uinder the effects of the Silence spell their struggles were not heard but the third guard spotted the now visible Tyrade. Gwyn stepped forward with an Entangle version of Spiritual Whip, wrapping up the guard who was able to let out a shriek. At that, Jade and Tyrade cast a Rael’s Enlarging Arrow. Only Jade’s was successful and she fired but fumbled the arrow as Furion, in his invisible state, secretly approached the same guard and attacked. He hit and became visible. The guard struggled but was hit by Jade’s second shot which was coated with a sleep poison putting the guard out.
The guards now disabled the party approached. Gwyn entered the guard house looking for a control to open the gate. It was not easily found until she moved one of the incapacitated guards. Once found she threw the lever and the gates swung open. The group gathered up and hustled through where they were waylaid by the guards that had been sleeping outside the gate, apparently rousted by the noise of the gate guard. They had lined up on either side of the exit and ambushed the group as they exited.
These were also clad in white with the cobra insignia on their tunics. They moved in and attacked with martial arts. The first attack was a stunning touch that disabled Rennala but she was able to hold herself in the saddle as the horse continued to trot along. The same fate struck Jade as Cord was struck critically in the throat and rendered unable to speak. The battle engaged, Gwyn cast Prayer from inside the wagon, affecting everyone in the battle. Furion attempted to use a Shiver but it failed.
The group tried to push through but the Ninja maintained contact, restricting their ability to make an escape. They continued with various martial attacks. Stunning, disabling and ordinary physical damage strikes and one attempt to establish a choke hold. But all this was now too much for Cord. He pulled the wagon to a stop and made it clear he had had enough and they were going to deal with these Ninja. Furion loosed an Icy Missile, Morgana used a Summon Insects, Tyrade found that Sleep was ineffective against these opponents. Morgana followed up with a Snapdragon disabling 3 of the 6 opponents as Cord was struck critically once again, this time in the knee, dropping from his feet. The group fought back, Jade hitting with an Enlarged Arrow and Furion his Elven blades. Morgana wrapped up 4 with an Entangle. Now the battle turned in their favor as 4 of the 6 were now rendered incapacitated.
Parker evoked a Holy Flail to enter the fray, Jade hot with another enlarged arrow scoring the first kill. Furion followed with the second kill. They were now shooting fish in a barrel as Morgana loosed a Hailstone and Jade an Aganaver’s Scorcher on one that Cord finished off. The remaining targets were all disabled by the spells cast and there to be dispatched. Gwyn, Marci and Furion used a variety of attacks to complete the battle. A quick look down the street revealed some light beginning to appear down the street. The battle had made enough noise to attract attention. The decision was made to get ethir things in order quickly and beat feet out.
